Snow White… that beloved fairy tale that we all probably know best from the Disney movie but whose roots go much deeper.

I’m not going to lie, the music, the cute creatures, and the caricature dwarves were pretty amazing but I think it’s important that we look past the pretty colours to the message behind the story – and realise that it needs to be re-written.

I think we all know that fairy tales have a serious problem of princesses always needing rescuing. In general, they’re passive characters who make stupid choices, and Snow White is no exception. Now, you could argue that the story was written in another time when stereotyped gender roles were firmly entrenched, and therefore it shouldn’t be judged too harshly. I argue that seeing as the story is still being told today, that it should be held to as high a standard as anything else.

In case you haven’t read the original, you can find (a version of) it here: http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/grimm053.html

But in summary:

  • Snow White is forced to run away when her evil mother/step-mother tries to have her killed for being more beautiful than she is.
  • The Huntsman can’t bring himself to kill her because she’s too pretty
  • She takes shelter with a group of dwarves who insist that she do the household chores if she wants to live with them. They also give her strict instructions not to let anyone into the house.
  • The queen visits disguised as a peddler and Snow White lets her in – she then tries to suffocate Snow White with a too-tightly laced corset.
  • The dwarves save Snow White and tell her not to let anyone in, because it will be the queen.
  • The queen visits disguised as a peddler and Snow White lets her in – she then poisons Snow White with a comb.
  • The dwarves save Snow White and tell her not to let anyone in, because it will be the queen.
  • The queen visits disguised as a peddler (are you seeing a pattern?) and Snow White lets her in – she then eats a poisoned apple.
  • The dwarves don’t want to bury the ‘dead’ Snow White because she’s so pretty so instead they put her in a glass case so they can keep looking at her (creepy?).
  • One day a prince comes along, sees how pretty she is, and buys her from the dwarves.
  • Different versions have it different ways, but from what I could tell, the most common story has the prince’s servants dropping the coffin which dislodges the apple from Snow White’s throat and she comes alive.
  • The prince is of course already in love with her because of how pretty she is, and she instantly falls in love with him, and they instantly get married.
  • They then kill the evil queen by making her dance to death in shoes of heated iron… (Happily Ever After?)

So… THREE Times she’s warned not to let anyone into the house because it will be the queen… THREE. But of course, being the innocent and pure girl that she is, and getting distracted by shiny objects… she does it anyway.

What I take from this story (and please comment if you disagree), is that girls should be pure, innocent, trusting, and of course pretty (and married). Is it really any wonder that society suffers from an obsession with body image when these are the stories we’re brought up on?

Throughout Snow White there seems to be a theme of female dependence on males, essentially telling young girls; “Don’t worry, no matter how stupid and passive you are, provided you’re pretty, a charming prince will save you.”

So much for empowering young women…

You may have noticed I have strong feelings on this issue… and it was this that most inspired me to re-write the Snow White fairy tale. To tell it with a strong and active female hero who saves herself instead of waiting for prince charming. Thus, Snow White 2.0 was born:

An Outcast Living In Exile

Ravyn is a Desirable living amongst those society has shunned. She wants nothing more than to live in peace working on her hover-bikes.

Drawn Back Into Conflict…

When she’s nominated for Fairest of them All she’s hurled into direct conflict with the personification of everything she despises, the current queen.

In order to survive, Ravyn must fight to overthrow the queen and the kingdom’s obsession with good looks, with only the help of seven dysfunctional robots.

Snow White 2.0 is a fast paced, thought provoking retelling of the classic fairy tale.
